A practical guide to home EV charger installation in Southampton, covering charger choice, cable routes, consumer units, and what to send for an accurate quote.

Why EV Charger Installation Is Not a Simple DIY Job

If you have just bought an electric vehicle or you are thinking about making the switch, one of the first things you will need is a home charging point. It sounds straightforward — buy a charger, plug it in, and away you go. But EV charger installation is much more involved than most people expect.

Not every electrician is experienced with EV chargers, and not every installation is the same. Getting it right from the start means safer charging, better performance, and fewer problems down the line.

What Goes Into a Proper EV Charger Installation?

An EV charger installation is not just screwing a box to the wall and running a cable. There are several technical factors that need proper design and attention.

  • Cable size — The cable feeding the charger needs to be the right size for the load and the distance from the consumer unit. Too small and it overheats. Too long without the right size and voltage drop becomes a problem.
  • Earthing arrangement — The type of earthing system in your property affects how the charger is protected. This needs checking before installation begins.
  • Load management — If your home already draws a lot of power, adding a 7kW charger on top can overload the supply. Load management ensures the charger works within the available capacity.
  • Consumer unit protection — The charger circuit needs the correct type of circuit breaker and RCD protection. In many cases, a dedicated RCBO is required.
  • RCD type — EV chargers often require Type A or Type B RCD protection, depending on the charger model. Using the wrong type can be unsafe or non-compliant.
  • Surge protection — Current regulations often require surge protection devices (SPDs) to be fitted, protecting both the charger and your home's electrical installation.
  • Cable route — The route from the consumer unit to the charger location matters. It affects cable length, cost, appearance, and whether any building work is needed.

Each of these needs to be assessed before a charger goes on the wall. A proper installation is designed, not just fitted.

Choosing the Right EV Charger for Your Home

There are several popular EV chargers on the UK market, and the right one depends on your vehicle, your tariff, and how you want to manage charging.

At Solid Electrics, we install chargers including Hypervolt, Ohme, Zappi and others. Each has its own strengths:

  • Hypervolt — A sleek, reliable charger with a good app and smart tariff integration. Popular for its clean design and straightforward setup.
  • Ohme — Known for excellent smart charging features that automatically charge during the cheapest electricity rates. Great if you are on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Go.
  • Zappi — Made by Myenergi, this charger can integrate with solar panels and battery storage. A strong choice if you generate your own electricity and want to maximise self-consumption.

My advice is to think about what matters most to you — smart tariff integration, solar compatibility, app features, or simply a reliable unit that does the job well. We can help you decide based on your setup and priorities.

Why Not Every Electrician Should Install an EV Charger

EV charger installation requires specific knowledge that goes beyond general electrical work. An electrician who is excellent at rewiring a house may not have the experience needed for charger installations.

The installer needs to understand:

  • The charger manufacturer's installation requirements
  • Current BS 7671 wiring regulations as they apply to EV charging
  • How to assess the existing electrical supply and consumer unit capacity
  • Load management calculations and DNO notification requirements
  • The correct type of protective devices for the specific charger being fitted

A poorly installed charger can cause tripping, overheating, or even void your vehicle warranty. It is worth choosing an electrician who regularly installs EV chargers and understands the detail involved.

What Information Do We Need Before Quoting?

Before we can give you an accurate quote, we usually ask for a few things. This helps us design the installation properly and avoids surprises on the day.

  • Photos of your consumer unit — This tells us about available space, existing protection, earthing type, and whether an upgrade might be needed.
  • Photos of your meter box — We need to check the supply type and whether there is enough capacity for the charger.
  • Photos of the proposed charger location — Where you want the charger mounted, including the parking area and any walls or obstacles.
  • A short video of the cable route — Walking from the consumer unit to the charger location on video is often better than ten separate photos. It shows distance, access, obstacles, and the best route for the cable.

Sending these in advance saves time, reduces confusion, and often means we can provide a more accurate quote without needing a separate survey visit. Most customers find this quick and convenient.

Do You Need a Consumer Unit Upgrade for an EV Charger?

Not always, but it is common. If your consumer unit is an older type without RCD protection, or if there is no spare way for the new circuit, an upgrade or modification may be needed.

Modern consumer units with RCBO protection give each circuit its own independent protection. This means that if the EV charger circuit trips for any reason, it does not take out your lights and sockets at the same time.

We will always check your consumer unit as part of the quotation process and let you know if any changes are recommended. There are no hidden surprises — everything is discussed and agreed before the work starts.

How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost?

The cost of EV charger installation depends on several factors: the charger model, cable route length, consumer unit condition, and whether any additional work is needed such as a board upgrade or external containment.

Every property is different, which is why we do not advertise a single fixed price. A terraced house with the consumer unit next to the driveway is a very different job to a detached property where the cable needs to run 20 metres through a garage.

What we can promise is a clear, written quote with no hidden extras. You will know exactly what is included before any work begins.

We had two relatively small jobs - replacing an exterior lamp and replacing a bathroom vent. A previous electrician had cut power to the lamp switch but Shem diligently traced it and got it sorted.
